Contractors for the East Gippsland Catchment Management Authority have recently placed 120 logs along 4.5 kilometres of the Nicholson River between the Great Alpine Road and the Princes Highway to provide additional fish habitat as part of the on-going rehabilitation of the river.
The logs were attached to 60 piles driven into the river bed. An excavator on a barge was used to drive the piles. The logs were then transported by barge and secured to these piles using wire rope.
The logs will complement existing natural logs, and six log structures placed in the river in 2008. The new logs will quickly become colonised by invertebrates and crustaceans that provide food for juvenile and adult fish. The submerged logs will also provide shelter for fish, particularly Black Bream, as they move up and down the river.
The placement of the logs is part of an on-going program of in-stream habitat improvement that together with riparian vegetation restoration and stock proof fencing is designed to improve the stability and health of the river.
The works were funded using revenue raised from the sale of Victorian Recreational Fishing Licences and money allocated through the Natural Resource Investment Program.
Boaters along the river should keep clear of the banks where single piles indicate the presence of submerged logs.
