The Marinas 2011 International Conference and Exhibition was the venue for agreement by club marina managers and CEOs to form a national club marina management group.
Fourteen Club GMs and CEOs met immediately after a Marinas 2011 breakout session examining club marina governance, planning and operational matters.
Richard Hewett, Chief Executive of the Sandringham Yacht Club initiated the meeting and said there was a high level of commitment and enthusiasm by the club marina sector to establishing such a group. 'As clubs are driven to be more business focused, accountable and transparent in their operations it is very timely to establish such a group to facilitate the sharing of information and best practice operations.'
At the first informal meeting of the group it was agreed to establish an immediate electronic networking forum for the group. Furthermore it was anticipated arising from this forum issues and agendas will evolve that will shape the program for an annual meeting of the group.
Stuart Walton, GM of Royal Perth Yacht Club and a director of MIAA said the commitment to form this group was potentially a very important development for Australia’s club marina sector. 'Formation of this group is long overdue and the MIAA is committed to supporting the formation and ongoing operations of this group.'
It was agreed at the meeting to physically meet when possible linked with other industry functions such Marinas 2013 or another significant industry event to add further value to the investment in the group. Paul Hughes, General Manager of Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron said the group will be important not just for club management but that the benefits will flow through to club boards and club membership.
'The breakout session for club marinas at Marinas 2011 was highly interactive with all 47 participants taking away good ideas to implement in their own club. The session highlighted the benefits that can flow from an ongoing forum that will cost effectively connect club management across the country.'
Any club managers interested in joining the group should contact Richard Hewett, CEO at Sandringham Yacht Club or Colin Bransgrove at MIAA.
