New fishing resource for industry and community

There will soon be an online resource for the fishing industry and recreational anglers, scientists, researchers and anybody with an interest in the marine environment, issues and fishing - fish.com.au

Fish.com.au is owned by David Garrett, an avid boatie and charter operator with an IT background, who has a background in online magazines and e-commerce sites. David registered fish.com.au with the strategic objective of creating a relevant and global point of information for everybody interested in fishing.

'Fishing is the number one pastime in Australia. There had to be a role there for it,' he explains.

A Gold Coast boy, David was raised around boats and has been a competitive sailor in his younger years, as well as spending a lot of time on the water with his family. These days David holds his Master 5 qualifications and runs a Halicat charters out of Sydney, for fishing, whale watching and nature trips offshore, observing birds, dolphins and even orcas throughout the year, popular with researchers, biologists and the public.

Fish.com.au is the ideal name for the site which aims to 'collect and disseminate good science, discuss and communicate positive and negative arguments, build the fishing community and act as a rallying point'.

As David explains: 'I was looking for a cause. I met Keith Douglas from the Marine Action Group and Australian Fishing Alliance at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, and was inspired by his standpoint and the speech of Dr Ben Diggles.

'There are a lot of researchers with good information out there, who understand the science. I want to make it available for the industry, community and anybody who wants to enter the discussion.'

Fish.com.au will act as 'a good reference point, stating the aims and objectives, running releases from key people in the industry, and it will grow organically and build from there', says David, adding that it is likely to be up and running with first releases and members in one month.

'How it develops depends on the community that will drive it. It will be interactive. I believe good fishers are good environmentalists. By promoting good science we can achieve good environmental outcomes for fishers and the environment. And the other important aim is to have fun!'
