The country’s peak marine industry body has called for a Marine Industry Emergency Revival Summit to combat declining boat sales, usage and increasing threats to the viability of businesses in the marine industry.
Marine Queensland Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Don Jones said while it may be viewed as alarmist to use the term crisis talks – a national forum had been called to canvas as many options as possible to develop a priority action plan to help industry through tough economic times.
Mr Jones said that nationally, the Boating Industry Associations represented more than 1,500 land and water based businesses employing around 12,000 people who have been virtually ignored by Federal and State governments who do not see the industry as a priority.
'We always hear about the loss to the livelihoods of farmers and the building industry but this industry is hurting too,' he said. 'Family businesses have folded and jobs lost: the impact on marine businesses right across the country cannot be ignored.
'Add to that the significant drop in boat usage and new boat registrations and it is time to get serious to stem the ever increasing job losses within the industry.
'This is the time for action. It is an opportunity for the entire marine industry supply chain - boat, engine and component manufacturers, marine retailers, service providers and marinas - to have a say about what needs to be done.'
The Summit will deliver updates on key issues currently confronting the industry and actions in progress, a deep analysis of the market climate and forecasts of the development potential of the industry.
'This is about real people discussing real situations and solutions with the ultimate aim being a national priority roadmap for revival. Without prejudging outcomes, it is expected to include actions on grey imports and consensus to fund and develop a National Boating Promotion program.
The meeting will be facilitated by three times Walkley nominated journalist and A Current Affair Queensland producer Amanda Paterson with representatives from leading marine industry businesses and key industry organisations.
