The risks and potential pitfalls of buying grey imports will top the list of industry issues that need to be resolved in cooperation with government, the states BIAs and through communicating with consumers, says the BIAA.
Nik Parker, GM for the Boating Industries Alliance Australia (BIAA), reports that the Melbourne International Boat Show was the venue for many constructive steps in the formation of a strategy and focus for the BIAA, which will be acting as a unified, national voice for industry.
'Our aim was the launch the BIAA and outline is key objectives, but we ended up having some very valuable discussion with industry about one of our key subjects - grey imports.'
Parker says the organisation is in consultation with legal experts to establish the reality of what can be done to counter grey imports.
'We are also planning to beef up our consumer awareness campaign, pointing out the pitfalls and warranty issues associated with grey imports. As well as adding to the brochure we have distributed through boat shows and dealers, we will be focusing on getting more data, case studies and comment from the insurance industry to add to our case. This is after all, about protecting the consumer. It's not about competition, but about warning consumers that in many cases they may not have a valid warranty in the case that something goes wrong with their purchase.'
The general managers of the state organisations will be meeting again in five to six weeks time to progress the BIAA's nkey issues and objectives.
