U.S. Youth Multihull Championship close in Pedro Bay

'U.S. Youth Multihull Championship 2011'    Steve Jost

The U.S. Youth Multihull Championship has come to a close in San Pedro Bay. The championship has been hosted by Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach, California.

A total of 14 teams raced Viper F16s in light, shifty breezes this morning. Later on in the day the wind speed increased a bit with a hard shift. Towards the end, it was the team of Taylor Reiss (Panama City, Fla.) and Matthew Whitehead (Panama City, Fla.) who won the Arthur J. Stevens Trophy.

Reiss and Whitehead won four of the the five races completed over two days. They won all three races yesterday and the first race on Sunday. Reiss and Whitehead edged the duo of Jeremy Herrin (Sarasota, Fla.) and Jason D'Agostino (Sarasota, Fla.) who finished just one point behind the leaders. Herrin and D'Agostino posted a pair of bullets and finished second in three races. Watch this GoPro HD video from the event here.

'We've had a lot of practice in this boat and felt we were as prepared as we could be,' said Reiss. The winning tandem finished seventh in the previous U.S. Youth Multihull Championship in 2009. Reiss and Whitehead are looking forward to competing in this week's U.S. Multihull Championship, also hosted by the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club on June 15-18. They finished seventh in last year's event. Reiss and Whitehead are also preparing to compete at the ISAF Youth World Championships in Zadar, Croatia on July 7-16.

The U.S. Youth Multihull Championship is sponsored by Gill North America, Hobie Polarized Sunglasses, Switlik and Red Gear Racing. Australian High Performance Catamarans is the official boat supplier for the U.S. Youth Multihull Championship.

Teams raced using Australian High Performance Catamaran Viper F16s provided by Red Gear Racing… The U.S. Youth Multihull Championship competitors qualify by sailing a resume only… US Sailing medals will be awarded to the first, second and third place teams… Matthew Whitehead was presented with the W. Darline Hobock Sportsmanship Prize.
