2011 Senior & Masters Naples Sabot Nationals - Perfect conditions
|
2011 Senior & Masters Naples Sabot Nationals. The turning basin in Newport Harbor in Southern California was filled with Naples Sabot sails on June 4 and 5 as Balboa Yacht Club hosted the annual Senior Sabot Nationals for the International Naples Sabot Association (I.N.S.A.). The conditions were perfect with good wind, sunshine and favorable tide. There were a total of 37 competitors, including 11 in the Senior Class, 19 in the Masters Class, 4 in the Grand Masters and 3 in the Clydesdale Class. Yacht clubs represented included Alamitos Bay Yacht Club with 7 racers, Balboa YC with 8, Bahia Corinthian YC with 4, Mission Bay YC with 2, Newport Harbor YC with 5 and San Diego YC with 11. Seven races were held including four on Saturday and three on Sunday. Our Principal Race officer, Don Becker, had a great group of volunteers as the racing went smoothly during the regatta. Emails from some competitors after the event stated that it was the best run regatta they had attended. Particularly important to this event was our Measuring Team, since each of the boats and competitors had to be weighed and checked to be sure they conformed to the INSA rules. The team was led by Rowell Greene who planned everything down to the last inch. Trophies went to: Seniors (over 18 years of age): Mark Gaudio, BCYC, first, Freddie Stevens, ABYC, second, Caitlyn Ybarra, BYC, third, Stacey Szabo, SDYC, fourth, Danny North, SDYC, fifth. Masters (over 40 years of age): Tom Newton, ABYC, first, Betty Becker, SDYC, second, Gale Nye Pinckney, NHYC, third, Fred Stevens, ABYC, fourth, Terese Ivory, BCYC, fifth. Grand Masters (over 65 years of age): Nancy Mellon, BYC, first, Ruth Jones, MBYC, second, Kathleen Weishampel, ABYC, third. Clydesdales (weighing over 200 pounds) Jeff McDermaid, ABYC, first , Gator Cook, BYC, second and Latham Bell, ABYC third. Complete results are on the balboayachtclub.com web site. I.N.S.A. web site is naples-sabot.org. In addition, the eight foot long dinghies are very popular in the mild weather in So Cali and are raced year around. A series of five races are held during the year at five different yacht clubs from Long Beach to San Diego, with about forty boats competing in each. San Diego Yacht Club holds the November finale, with overall trophies presented there. Additional information about those events is available on Face Book at 'SailingSabots' or by email to nansailor(at)aol.com.
