International One Metre Class World Championships 2011 + Video

'International One Metre World Championships 2011'

International One Metre Class World Championships took place this past week at the West Kirby Sailing Club in Great Britain. The event was graced with an international fleet of 22 nations that gathered from as far afield as Argentina, Brazil, New Zealand, Canada and Israel to name a few.

As is common amongst radio sailing events with a higher number of races, consistency was the key and Peter Stollery (GBR) proved to be the most consistent and he was crowned as the champion ahead of former World Champion Brad Gibson in second.

From the middle of the regatta the pair were separated by little more than a couple of points with the regatta going down to the final race which the boats went into tied on points.

In the deciding race both boats uncharacteristically had problems starting with one being over the line and called back and the other running out of line and having to circle. Both boats rounded the first mark in the middle of the fleet. However it was Stollery who was able to recover to win the race and the event in style.

The level of competition was very high with five out of the six former One Metre World Champions competing. The week provided a good variety of conditions with the sailors using both the A and B rigs for considerable periods. The pre event favourites were World Champion Zvonko Jelacic (CRO) who in addition had also won the UK nationals at the venue the previous year together with Marko Matic (CRO), current European Champion. A strong showing from the British team was also expected who had a number of sailors capable of winning the event.

The One Metre Class via the International Radio Sailing Association (IRSA) gains it ability to hold an ISAF recognised World Championship. The British member of IRSA the Model Yachting Association has been celebrating it Centenary year and as part of these celebration HRH the Duke of Edinburgh visited the event being introduced to skippers and then observing some of the racing.

The One Metre class is measurement controlled class and a number of designed showed well during the week however it was the pre production BritPOP! designed by Brad Gibson which took the first three places.
