NSW Maritime reminds all skippers to take care

NSW Maritime today reminded skippers to take extra care offshore following three separate boating incidents along the coast.

The incidents today included a fishing boat that hit rocks off Bermagui, a boat capsized just of Port Hacking and a yacht that caught fire off South West Rocks.

In each incident the people on board escaped serious injury and were recovered.

NSW Maritime reminds skippers of the need for caution, especially when it comes to boating offshore.

Every skipper is responsible for the safety of their vessel and all those on board. When boating offshore the basic rules for safe and responsible boating include the following:
Check the weather
Ensure the vessel is suitable for the conditions
Carry all the required safety gear
Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return and
Know when to wear a lifejacket.

In the Bermagui incident a fishing boat hit rocks and the crew were recovered and taken to hospital, one with suspected head injuries, while the vessel was recovered.

At Port Hacking a boat with five people on board capsized near a reef just offshore from Port Hacking. All were recovered, including the vessel.

At South West Rocks a 12m catamaran caught fire and the crew made a mayday call prior to being picked up by helicopter.

There were dangerous surf conditions for many parts of the coast today and there is a gale warning for the south coast.
