Sail-World.com : A ducking in the Solent

A ducking in the Solent

'The sinking of the Duma'    .

The Duma being pulled ashore -  .. .
She was an vintage yacht, but solid, and her owners were on their way to the 'Old Gaffers Festival' at Yarmouth in the UK, when The Duma suddenly broached, and, in spite of frantic attempts to correct the problem, the little yacht sank quickly, dumping her owners into the cold water of the Solent, off Castle Point, East Cowes.

They were both in lifejackets, and were quickly picked up by a large yacht, the Kinsale. Trusty members of the Royal National Lifesaving Institution (RNLI) quickly arrived at the scene from Cowes to take charge of the wet but safe crew.

Although both seemed none the worse for their ducking Scott Armiger, helmsman of the lifeboat, arranged for an ambulance to attend to them as a precaution when they docked at Trinity Landing, Cowes.

The lifeboat then returned to the yacht, submerged but for the bow and mast. They managed to get a rope on board and eventually beach it close to the shore, using the yacht’s own anchor.

A lifeboat crewman waded through the shallow water to the Duma in the hope of recovering some of the couple’s personal possessions including their passports (both were from abroad), but the search proved unsuccessful.
