Sail-World.com : Portuguese 420 Championship day two

Portuguese 420 Championship day two

'Portuguese 420 Championships Day 2'    Tavira Sailing

Portuguese 420 Championships second day has delivered three races after a frustrating test of patience in the day's opening race four.

As winds increased for races five and six, the competing sailors experienced even more frustrations.

Luis Niza and Paulo Baptista sailed well enough to keep their overnight lead after opening the day with a race result of six, then retiring after completing race five.

Their best result for the day was a second in the day's final race six. The team is now equal in points with the second place team and the girl's top placed team of Patricia Costa and Ines Lucas.

All could unravel on Sunday's final day, with these two leading teams set to fight it out for the gold medal. Third overall after a 2,9,3 scoreline are Miguel Costa and Manuel Gamito, also from the Sailing Club of Barreiro.

Patricia and Inês are conscious of Luis and Paulo's experience, but they are very optimist about their performance so far and hoping to 'finish this championship as the Girls' National Champions or even as the Overall National 420 Champions.'

Midway through the Championships, João Cancela, President of the Race Committee, considers today's races as 'good, although the first race was shortened due to the light wind, the wind increased to 10-12 knots during the afternoon and we completed two stupendous sailing regattas. By tomorrow we hope to make the three races set and finish these contests with great quality.'

The 32 national teams and 64 sailors are competing for the top places of this race and to ensure a place on the 420 European Championships in July.
