Extreme Sailing Series 2011 Act 3 was hosted on the Halic estuary in Istanbul. Racing came to a close today, (Sunday 29 May) after five days of competition. Artemis Racing emerged victorious by just one point in front of second placed Emirates Team New Zealand.

For Australian Skipper Torvar Mirsky and his team on The Wave, Muscat it was a battle for fourth place until the final race of the day with Luna Rossa (ITA). Mirksy, who is the youngest skipper of the fleet, held his nerve and finished in fourth place.

Racing took place today in two sessions, (the first from 1500-1630, and the second form 1800-1930 local time) with Turkey’s national TV broadcaster, TRT, streaming live from the event for the second half. As the first half of racing came to a conclusion, The Wave Muscat were sat in fifth place, with just four points separating them from fourth placed Luna Rossa (ITA). Mirsky commented: 'Going into the second half of racing the pressure was really on but we felt pretty relaxed as a team. Our coach Leigh MacMillan(GBR) told us to focus on that fourth place, and we knew Luna Rossa would come out fighting.'

Mirsky managed to secure a series of top five results in the final races of the day, including a win in race eight, which left the him tied on points with Luna Rossa in fourth place, going into the final double points race,. A tense battle commenced between the two teams, with Luna Rossa pursuing The Wave Muscat the whole way round the course. Mirsky, commented, 'Myself and Paul Campbell-James (skipper of Luna Rossa) both come from a match racing background, so that last race was really tactical for us. Even before the race started we were fighting them in the pre-start which worked for us and they were given a penalty. Our priority was just to stay in front of them during that race, and even though we ended up at the back of the fleet, we held them off which is what we needed. I couldn’t be happier with the way that last race went'.

The fleet raced 44 races this week in Istanbul, more than any other act this year. The city has thrown a mix of challenging conditions at the teams, with gusts hitting 25 knots on the first day, compared to a subdued 8 knots of wind by the final race today. The Istanbul public flocked to the race village today to watch the 10 boat fleet battle it out on the short race course, with racing taking place spectacularly close to the shore. The city of Istanbul has never witnessed the impressive Extreme 40s in action before and an estimated 15,500 people turned out to watch them in action today. After an action packed day on the water, a public firework show brought the regatta to a spectacular finish.

The Extreme Sailing Series now travels to Boston in the USA, Cowes, UK, Italy, France, and Spain, before it’s conclusion in Singapore in December. Three different winners have emerged from the three Acts so far this year; Groupe Edmond de Rothschild claimed victory in Act One which was held out of The Wave Muscat in Oman, Luna Rossa in Act Two in Qingdao China, and now Artemis Racing are crowned victors in Istanbul. The overall Series leader remains the French team of Groupe Edmond de Rothschild.
