NSW Maritime was this week presented with a top international award for efforts in commercial vessel safety.

NSW Maritime Chief Executive Steve Dunn today said the International Institute of Marine Surveying, based in the United Kingdom, conferred its highest award to NSW.

'So far this year, NSW has registered a record low in vessel incidents and fatalities, and that is across both the recreational and commercial sectors,' Mr Dunn said.

'This is good news and the efforts of all should be acknowledged. By that I refer to the boating community, the marine industry and our safety regulator NSW Maritime.

'This is recognition of the high standards of safety being set in NSW.'

The International Institute of Marine Surveying’s highest award, the Crystal Award, was awarded to NSW Maritime for achievements in the following:
• Improvements in vessel safety;
• Advancements in design and structures;
• Improvements to legislation in commercial surveying; and
• Environmental improvements within the maritime industry.

In NSW, there are more than 9,000 commercial vessels ranging from simple hire and drive operations through to large passenger carrying charter vessels.

All these commercial vessels must meet appropriate safety standards. These standards exist to protect the public and cover vessel design, construction, seaworthiness – in particular safety equipment, maintenance and crew qualifications.

'This international recognition is evidence of the good work being done,' Mr Dunn said.

'With increasing numbers of people boating, ever increasing demand for boating experiences, and some of the finest waterways in the world – NSW Maritime is committed to delivering the best possible balance between public amenity and enjoyment of our waterways, and regulation,' Mr Dunn said.
