Inaugural P-class champion dies in Wellington
Well known Wellington yachtie, and winner of the inaugural Tanner Cup in 1945, Bill Hayman passed away on Monday. His funeral service will be held in Wellington on Friday 27th May.
A long-standing member of the Evans Bay Yacht & Motorboat Club in Wellington, Hayman was a dedicated sailor of centreboard yachts from the 1940s until he was well into his seventies.
Sailing Idle Alongs during the fifties Bill moved on to the R-Class which he enjoyed for many, many years.
'We had a lot of fun,' recalls Hal Wagstaff who sailed with Bill when they started out as juniors in the 1940s.
'In 1945 Bill beat me in the Wellington trial for the Tanner Cup. He then went on to win the Tanner Cup in what was the first edition of the event. Graeme Mander was second that year, he started young, and Graeme went on to win it in ’46 and ’47.'
'Bill was a staunch member of the Wellington sailing community – very popular and well known,' says Hal. 'He will be sorely missed.'
Bill is survived by his wife Shirley, and their family. Both from yachting families Bill and Shirley were childhood sweethearts, went on to marry and have three daughters.
