Yachting New South Wales Winter Training Program

'Young sailors at the Yachting NSW Winter Training Program'    Yachting New South Wales

As part of the goal of promoting the advancement of sailing in the state, Yachting New South Wales is currently running its Winter Training Program.

The main objective of the Winter Program is to maintain and develop the skills of young sailors so there is no seasonal lag requiring skills to be ‘re-learnt’ when the summer commences. All classes of racing and skill levels are accommodated, and the program also provides a venue for clubs to interact more closely with other clubs within their region.

The Winter Training Program’s young adult instructors are mentored throughout to enhance their practical skills whilst completing their qualifications. The instructors are given the opportunity to apply for a position within the program after completing the Yachting New South Wales instructor course, and over the last three years the program has grown to encompass a wide geographical area. The 2011 program is being run at Belmont 16’ Sailing Club, Cronulla Sailing Club, and Hunters Hill Sailing Club.

Junior Instructor Nina Long from Belmont 16' Sailing Club -  Yachting New South Wales

'The winter training program not only exposes sailors and clubs to some of the best junior instructors in the state, but gives those instructors the opportunity to develop their own skills under the guidance of a Yachting New South Wales senior coach. My role as a mentor involves making sure the training days are run to a high professional standard, and to give instructors constructive feedback on their own performance and suggest ways to improve. At the end of the program the sailors and instructors go back to their own clubs and improve the standard of sailing and coaching across the state.' Tom Brewer, Winter Training Program mentor.

YNSW Media -  Yachting New South Wales
Once again Yachting New South Wales would like to thank the generosity of the marine industry in sponsoring the training program. In particular Gill Australia who provide a uniform, and New South Wales Maritime who donate an inflatable life jacket to each junior instructor.

Places in the Winter Training Program are still available www.nsw.yachting.org.au/wintertraining
