36th Vintage Yacht Regatta at QCYC

During the Queen’s Birthday weekend (11th to 13th June) the Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC) in Shorncliffe is once again hosting the Vintage Yacht Regatta. The regatta, in its 36th year is a highlight of the classic yachting sailing calendar and attracts a large fleet of beautifully turned out vessels from yesteryear.
A fleet of around 40 of South East Queensland’s finest vintage yachts is expected at the event which is not just a 'show and tell' event according to Regatta Director Nigel Statham, 'The five races, sailed off Shorncliffe Headland each day, really allow these graceful yachts to spread their canvas'.
While most yachts will be vying for handicap trophies such as the Ted Rice Shield, the rivalry is equally fierce for line honours victory, and the Deagon Slipways Trophy and Australiawide Boat Sales Trophy.
Of the local boats, Cherana and Pagan, two almost identical Tasman Sea Bird class sloops are poised to continue their private duel which began in the recent Brisbane to Gladstone Race. Cherana (Euan MacDonald) which has the distinction of winning the 1959 Sydney Hobart Race was narrowly beaten by Pagan (Peter Kerr), winner of the 1964 Brisbane to Gladstone, in this year’s race and will no doubt be looking for some revenge.
Other local yachts doing battle will include Calypso III, a 1940’s round the world cruiser and Tahua, a 1939 Archie Barber design, whose bowsprit was the mizzen boom of the historic round the world ketch and inaugural Sydney Hobart competitor Kathleen Gillet, now the floating centrepiece at the National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour.
Mr Statham was keen to stress that the public can get great views of the fleet the Shorncliffe Headland. 'In addition, all are very welcome to view the yachts up close in the QCYC Marina before and after the races each day'. On Saturday night, all are welcome at the QCYC Clubhouse, for meals, socialising, and to dance the night away.
In addition to action on the water most skippers were equally determined to win the best presented trophies, such as the converted Albert Jeays Trophy. Yacht owners and spectators interested in the event can find full information at the Regatta’s website here
