RYA Olympic Classes Spring Series final event of the series will be held at Hayling Island Sailing Club (14-15 May) where the UK’s top Olympic hopefuls will battle for an event victory.
The first stage of the series was based at the home of the 2012 Olympic sailing competition, the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) on 12-13 March, and saw some incredible racing from current Skandia Team GBR Development and Transitional Squad members as well as young aspiring talents and regular Olympic classes sailors.
Philip Sparks and Richard Mason, Skandia Team GBR Development Squad members, produced an excellent performance taking the series lead in the men’s 470 class while Max Richardson and Nick Redding were dominant in the 49er fleet taking pole position heading into the final stages of the series.
The Finn class saw James Hadden pick up three races wins in the opening event at WPNSA while Ali Masters in the RS:X 8.5 and Jamie Ingram in the RS:X 9.5 fleets will be vying for domestic honours as they both occupy top spots in their respective classes.
Skandia Team GBR Development Squad members Sophie Weguelin and Sophie Ainsworth lead the women’s 470 class at the half way point with four race wins under their belt, while Claudia Carney’s final race win leaves her top of the RS:X 8.5 class with Izzy Hamilton hot on her tail in second with the same amount of points.
The RYA Olympic Classes Spring Series is compulsory for all Skandia Team GBR Development and Transitional squad members and offers competitive racing early on in the domestic racing season. The event also provides the chance for younger sailors to pit their skills against the nation’s best in Olympic class boats.
Hayling Island Sailing Club will also be welcoming the RYA and Skandia Team GBR’s first ‘Girls 4 Gold’ women’s skiff training weekend where female helms and crews were invited to try out all high-performance asymmetric two-person boats in light of ISAF’s decision to introduce a women’s skiff event for the 2016 Games in Rio.
This weekend will be the first of the two events, with the second weekend taking place at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on the 18-19 June. To book your berth for the WPNSA weekend, click here.
