Sail-World.com : Team Tunnicliffe trains for USSTAG qualifier

Team Tunnicliffe trains for USSTAG qualifier

'In Sheboygan, Team Tunnicliffe, Audi Match Race Team, Coach Dave Dellenbaugh'    Team Tunnicliffe
Anna Tunnicliffe updates us from Sheboygan, Wisconsin on Team Tunnicliffe’s spring training for the upcoming USSTAG qualifier event.

The leaves are finally starting to bud through on the trees, hopefully meaning Spring is on its way around here in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where we have been for a week, training in preparation for our upcoming USSTAG qualifier event.

But despite the chilly temperatures, we have had some great training and are ready to start racing tomorrow morning. We traveled to Sheboygan last Wednesday to start training.

Debbie and Coach Dave Dellenbaugh, arrived into Milwaukee and were supposed to beat the rest of us up here by a couple of hours, but Dave's flights were all delayed because of storms so he landed only 30 minutes before we arrived; 'we' being me, Molly, and our Finnish training partners, Audi Match Race Team - Silja, Silja, and Miksu. The five of us arrived in Chicago, and met at the downtown train station. We hopped on the train to Milwaukee, where we arrived around 9:30pm. We then took a shuttle up to Sheboygan and arrived here around 11pm.

When we awoke on day one of training, the temperature was in the high 30's and the wind in the upper teens. By the time we were ready to hit the water to start training, the temperature had crept up to around 45oF, but the wind chill was still in the 30's. We all decided that we just had to get on the boats and push off and go for it, and it was a great idea. We had a fantastic three hour session with big waves and wind. From then on, the temperatures were cold, but it did gradually get warmer throughout the week, so we couldn't complain about much after that.

We had five very good training days with the Finnish team before they had to head home on Tuesday (yesterday) for their event this weekend in Finland. You would think that sailing in the chilly temperatures here would be good conditioning and practice for them for their return home, but they kept telling us that it was around 60 degrees there so were looking forward to getting back to the warmth. We want to thank them for making the trip over to come and train with us and we wish them luck this weekend in their own event.

Yesterday, we did a day of practice with our other USSTAG teammates. It was good to sail against them again too before the event since it's been over two weeks since we have seen them all. Today is the official practice day of the regatta and racing starts tomorrow. We are weighing-in in about an hour's time and then sailing around noon before relaxing for the rest of the evening.

There are four teams at the event, which will mean a lot of quick, fast paced racing for the next four days. I will try to find the regatta website and live blog and post it if there is one, otherwise we will have nightly blogs to update you on the day's events. Racing starts tomorrow morning at 10am.

We would like to thank our gold level sponsor 11th Hour Racing, and our bronze level sponsors Carmeuse, Trinity Yachts, and Chicago Match Race Center for their continued support of our campaign for the 2012 Olympic Games. We would also like to thank US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics (USSTAG) and its sponsors for their continued support. Also, thank you to our private donors. Please remember that any and all donations/contributions to our campaign should be made payable directly to either The Sailing Foundation of New York (tax deductible) memo'd Anna Tunnicliffe, or to Anna Tunnicliffe.
