Storm, stunts and victory at the season opener for Team Gaebler

Team Gaebler Update.

This was the perfect start of the multihull sailing season in north Europe. The high-pressure area, which we have been loyal for weeks here in the north, has also given us the best weekend of all sailing conditions.

We are used to the Nordic easterly winds with strong gusts on Lake Schwerin. Somehow we were able to sail over the course without major failures, and won the first race of the season for the Tornado with positions 2-1-1-1-1-1.

But there were many capsizes in the field of Tornados, Hobie Cats and Top Cats. And the water was really cold. So we all had eyes on each other, watching out so that nothing happened. We all wanted to sail forward, but the sailing conditions were challenging, especially the sudden gusts which shot down over the forest on the banks then onto the water.

And for many after the first day of the race, it was already over. Either material failure or slight damage to the body of their craft made further sailing impossible. The blue spots (bruises) on the body we can no longer count the number. Even now, everything hurts. But that is precisely what happens to you on these fast catamarans. There is much that can tear the sheets and halyards, you have to react quickly so that the boat is not out of control.

We are pleased that we arrived safely and were able to start the season with a victory in front of the beautiful castle of Schwerin.

This week we will be attending the Conference of the International Sailing Federation ISAF in St Petersburg. There, the final vote of sailing disciplines for the Olympic Games 2016 will be made.

It was right that the winning teams in the Tornado, Hobie Cat and Top Cat were all mixed teams. Sailing as a couple is simply a lot of fun we think.

This must be an Olympic sport. In seven days we will know the outcome.
