Cadet UK May 2011 preview

Cadet Class Association UK preview of events during May.

After April’s extended period of high pressure, which frustratingly culminated in no races being sailed at last weekend’s Noble Marine Cadet Inland Championships, conditions appear a lot more favourable for May with the Met Office suggesting brisk, even strong winds, as we progress through the month.

This Sunday brings the first of this year’s Open meetings. Frensham Pond SC are hosting their one-day event, which traditionally draws one of the biggest entries of the season. Sponsored once again by Guildford Marine, four races are scheduled with the first race at 10.20am. This event is the first counting towards both the Ian Craig Trophy, sailed at five inland venues and the Southern Traveller Series, sailed at a combination of five inland and coastal venues across the south and south-west.

The weekend of 7th/8th May takes members of the RYA North and South Zone training squads to Rutland Water for the RYA Eric Twiname Championships. The pinnacle of the RYA’s Junior racing calendar, the championships are now in their 25th year and will see young competitors in over 285 boats from various classes and windsurfers pit their sailing skills against the best young talents from each of six English Zones, and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, in a bid to help their Zone or home country team clinch the coveted Eric Twiname Shield at the end of the weekend.

Saturday 14th May sees the class at Tamesis SC on the River Thames at Teddington Reach. Competing for the Munster Cup, which is one of the most prestigious trophies in the Cadet Class, the Tamesis Open offers challenges not found at any other meeting in the calendar. Some are natural, such as the trees on the far-side of the river; others are human, such as rowers and the occasional riverboat. It all makes for very open racing. This event is the second in the Ian Craig series.

The weekend of the 14th/15th also sees the RYA National Junior Squad at Stone for their final training event of the season. Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy is the destination for the May Bank Holiday weekend for what is scheduled to be the final indicator leading to the selection of the GBR team for this year’s World Championships in Kuhlungsborn, Germany. However, with only five qualifying races completed so far, at least five races must be sailed to avoid having to fit a further indicator into an already full programme.
