2011 Australian University Fleet Racing Regatta review

This year's Australian University Fleet Racing Regatta was held in Lake Burley Griffin, Canberra (ACT) from April 24th to 26th.

The ANU Sailing club and UTS sailing club members were host club and organizers for or this year’s event. There were 18 entries from 8 universities. The universities who attend the regatta were ANU, Canberra Uni, UTS, USYD, UNSW, Melbourne Monash and Wollongong. Lasers, Radials, Tasars, Spiral, Mistral, Mosquito, B14, Sharpie classes raced against each other on the same course and points were given depending on their Portsmouth Yard stick. Courses were triangle with 1 loop (down wind finish)

Racing at the University fleet racing regatta started only on day 2 in very light wind, glassy conditions. Race committee did a great job in hosting four races in these very difficult conditions. The third and last day of racing conditions on the lake were perfect with 10 knots, gusty and shifty conditions. Five races were held smoothly.

UNSW’s Leung Yeo Bo (mistral) sailed an almost perfect regatta winning seven races out of nine. He is the first windsurfer to win an Australian University Fleet racing regatta. There was though racing in the laser fleet but USYD’s Nick Howe came out on top comfortably finishing second overall with only five points separating the top two. Quietly in his spiral, Richard Blessington from ANU chipped away a good series to just finish ahead of laser sailor Ajay Rau from UNSW. They finished third and fourth respectively overall. Cameron Edwards from UNSW just managed to pip Monash entry, Caitlin Davies to finish the regatta in fifth place and win the radial division. Caitlin was first among the women and finished a respectable sixth overall competing hard against the all the men sailing the lasers.

In the Tasar class Tom mallet/ Otto Yeung (USYD) did enough to finish well clear of closest rivals Josie Roper /Katie Webb ( USYD/UTS). The faster Sharpie (ANU) and B14 (UTS) class failed to compete against the smaller boat’s finishing 11th and 13th overall respectively. ANU comfortably won the best university trophy for putting in a good combined score, as they were also the largest contingent by far at this year’s fleet racing regatta.

Commodores' Adam Leavesley and Daniel Watson of ANU sailing club and UTS sailing club deserve special thanks from the University Sailing community for putting in their personal time and effort for ensuring this regatta was a success. All the Volunteers from ANU sailing club also deserve a special mention for catering for all out of station sailors needs during the regatta. This was the third successful University fleet racing regatta and we hope everyone from the student community can join us again for the fourth edition next year.
