A safety exclusion will be in place on a section of Newcastle Harbour this weekend for the Offshore Superboat Championship.

NSW Maritime Chief Executive Steve Dunn said boaters were reminded an exclusive use permit has been granted to the organisers, the Australian PowerBoat Association, for the Offshore Superboat Championships on Saturday between 1pm and 4pm and Sunday from 8am to 2pm.

'The area downstream of the Stockton Bridge, Dyke Berth 1 andCowper Road Bridge of Newcastle Harbour will all be off limits for vessels not involved in the event,' Mr Dunn said.

'To ensure public safety, NSW Maritime will maintain an exclusion zone during both the heats and the race, and boaters wishing to observe the event should stay clear of the exclusion zone and follow directions of race officials and boating safety officers.'

Mr Dunn said an access lane would be established for pleasure craft and shipping to the south of the main shipping channel.

'Competitors must remain to the north of the access lane and within the main shipping channel,' Mr Dunn said.
