Why do we do it?
Why do we tow tonnes of trailable boats all over the country every season to sit on top of each other at congested marks and crowded anchorages?
The question will be asked and answered again this long weekend as 158 of the country’s best trailable monohull and multihull sailboats converge on Tin Can Bay for the expected downwind drag race in 20 knots of south-easterly to Hervey Bay after an overnight stop at the famous Garry’s Anchorage.
This scenic race takes crews through the pristine Sandy Straits along the inside of Fraser Island each year, although the numerous gybes allow little time to take a picture. Little wonder then that crews blow off a little steam at the Garry’s Anchorage session on anchored boats, with the revelry guaranteed to keep the howling dingoes at bay (hopefully the 4 metre crocodile spotted in 2009 will help there also).
Although the bulk of the fleet are based in SE Qld, we are blessed again this year with boats from NQ and every eastern state.
Many crews took advantage of the Easter break last week being so close to this weekend and hit the Straits for a pre-race cruise, and perhaps to take a few careful tactical notes for the upcoming sandbank skipping race.
