Inaugural Centenary Regatta approaches

'1999 around the world teenage sailing legend Jesse Martin'
Sandringham Yacht Club’s legends are gathering this Saturday morning 30th April to celebrate their Club’s Centenary year.

The legends include 1999 around the world teenage sailing legend Jesse Martin together with two of the Club’s Sydney to Hobart winners Lou Abrahams (two wins) and Giorgio Gjergja, together with Sydney 2000 Olympics gold medallist Mark Turnbull plus club life members and heroes.

An eighteen strong international contingent from the Osaka HOKKO Yacht Club led by Vice Commodore Tsutomu Kondo has arrived to celebrate SYC’s milestone.

On Saturday morning they will be welcomed by the Club’s Flag Officers led by Commodore Steve Richards, Bayside City Council Mayor Cr Alex del Porto and Local Member the Hon Murray Thompson.

HOKKO Yacht Club (with the assistance of SYC) stages Melbourne to Osaka race and several of its visiting members are to compete in Saturday’s inaugural Club Marine Centenary Regatta off Sandringham.

Victoria’s revered gold plated former Great Circle Race - Lady Nelson trophy has been given a new lease of life as the new IRC and AMS Victorian State Titles perpetual trophy. Australia’s premier insurer, Club Marine is the Centenary Regatta’s exclusive sponsor that will see the Bay’s top grand prix racers, serious inter club sailors and a flotilla of power craft and sail boats fill the bay off Sandringham. SYC club sailing captain Mark Welsh says, 'We are delighted with the huge list of entries especially from those clubs at the top end of the Bay that will contest the state titles in typical autumn weather of light variable breezes and low 20 C temperatures.'

The Clubs history dates to 1911 when a handful of locals formed the Sandringham Yachting and Angling near the Hampton Pier. Within a year it changed its name to the Sandringham Yacht Club conducting its first racing during the summer of 1913-14. One hundred years on with his Royal Highness Prince Phillip as its Commodore in Chief, it has grown to be Australia’s premier club with nearly 2,600 members enjoying a world class marina, off the beach centre and sate of the art club house facilities.

Club Marine is proud to be the exclusive naming-rights sponsor of the inaugural Sandringham Yacht Club’s signature Centenary Regatta. A long-term supporter of recreational boating, racing and all facets of the great Australian marine lifestyle, Club Marine is the country’s largest provider of pleasure craft insurance, meeting the needs of boaters for more than 40 years.
