Chalking up an average speed of well over 10 knots since leaving Fremantle at noon yesterday, the racing yacht Limit was in control of the Visit Indonesia Fremantle Bali 2011 international yacht race to Bali when early this morning when an accident on board caused crewman Darryl Harris to fall and break several ribs.

He was stabilised on deck before being strapped to one of the yacht’s removable pipe cots and transferred below, while the yacht immediately altered course for Geraldton.

The race control team headed by principal race officer Trevor Milton were advised of the accident by radio immediately and arranged for an ambulance to be on standby as the yacht arrived at 10am.

Harris was reported to be in good spirits and will be transferred to Geraldton Regional Hospital. He will take no further part in the event, leaving the boat to continue with fifteen crew.

In a light hearted footnote to the incident, Geraldton Yacht Club members organized the emergency supply of 15 bacon and egg rolls for the remaining crew as they turned the yacht around to continue in the race.
