Semaine Olympique Française day three.
Today’s racing at French Olympic Sailing Week was plagued with a late start due to weather, creating yet another long day on the water for US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics athletes competing in 10 Olympic and two Paralympic classes.
To date, most fleets have completed six races with the 49ers completing nine. Women’s Match Racing continued its Gold and Repechage Rounds, which will determine seeds for the Quarter-Final Round.
In Elliott 6m, Women’s Match Racing, Team Barkow – Sally Barkow (Nashotah, Wis.), Alana O’Reilly (Charleston, S.C.) and Elizabeth Kratzig Burnham (Miami, Fla.) – won all three of their matches in the Gold Round, with the remainder of the round to be completed on Wednesday. In the Repechage Round, Team Tulloch – Genny Tulloch (Sausalito, Calif.), Alice Manard Leonard (New Orleans, La./East Haven, Conn.) and Jenn Chamberlin (Washington, D.C.) – are up two wins, one loss and will complete their round tomorrow as well.
Zach Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) turned in a four-three in the Finn class, one of few classes to complete more than one race today. He now stands in fifth overall. US Sailing Development Team member Luke Lawrence (Palm City, Fla.) had his best finish, to date, with an eighth in race 5.
Alex Bishop (Vars, France) and Val Smith (Wilmette, Ill.) had a fantastic performance in the 49er class with a four-three. They move up to 31st overall.
Another solid day of racing with a six-four for the Sonar team of Rick Doerr (Clifton, N.J.), Brad Kendell (Tampa, Fla.) and Hugh Freund (South Freeport, Me.). They continued to solidify their third overall.
2008 Paralympic Bronze Medalist John Ruf (Pewaukee, Wis.) found his groove on the 2.4mR course to post a three-seven and move up the standings to 13th overall.
In the Star class, all four USSTAG teams are in the top 11: George Szabo (San Diego, Calif) and Mark Strube (Ponta Gorda, Fla.) in fourth overall; Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) and Ian Coleman (Annapolis, Md.) in seventh; Andy Horton (South Burlington, Vt.) and James Lyne (Granville, Vt.) in tenth; and Rick Merriman (New York, N.Y.) and John von Schwartz (Annapolis, Md.) in 11th.
Mark Strube on Star racing: 'Prior to today we were pretty consistent with all top 10 finishes. Today saw what seemed to be many boats over and only one called (back). We dipped below the start at about 10 seconds because we felt we were over. The rest of the boats just kept going. We started close to the pin and got ping-ponged up the first beat and got caught outside of a big shift which put us pretty far back. We fought our way back to around 14th by the top of the last weather mark but lost a few right at the finish which put us at 18th for the day. The next few days we need to be on the line and let our boat speed and tactics do the work. We feel pretty fast but got a little unlucky on the first beat.'
Nick Martin on day 3 and the challenges with light-wind in Hyeres: 'We have been sticking to our game plan. Unfortunately, our game plan has been to go to the wrong side. We have been battling our way back when we could and always gaining boats. We’re pretty happy.'
