US 18 Footers League is to hold a two day clinic based out of Richmond Yacht Club to help promote the fleet.

The newly formed US 18 Footers League is hoping to become the central clearinghouse for 18' sailing in the US. 'We are working in conjunction with other international fleets to build the US 18 fleet in size and skill, raise the profile of 18 sailing locally, nationally, and internationally, and hopefully, eventually use it as a platform to pitch the boats and the 'league' to potential sponsors.'

'The main goal for 2011 is to raise the interest level and participation in the fleet through various clinics, practice regattas and regattas. In 2012 we intend on having a five regatta Summer Championship series and a four regatta Winter championship series.'

'The long term goal is to get our boats up and on par to be competitive not only the StFYC International Regatta but also the Mark Foy Trophy Championship which is scheduled to be hosted in SF in 2013. We also want to increase the participation of US sailors and boats in the JJ Giltinan Regatta.'

'Our primary focus currently is to build support for our facebook page (U.S. 18 Footers League) and to construct our webpage (which will be www.18footers.us) and develop as much content as possible on those pages and through other media outlets to generate interest in the fleet.'

'This weekend we are hosting our first clinic at the Richmond Yacht Club. There are currently 11 confirmed participants for both days and a handful of others who can only make one day or the other. We are going to be filming with Go Pros, collecting GPS tracks, conducting athlete interviews, and taking still shots.

This weekend’s two day clinic based out of Richmond YC will meet at the boats at 10 a.m. both days to rig and get ready to be on the water. Dan Brandt will be setting up a course for us, running practice starts, and running practice races. The clinic will run until approximately 4:00 PM. We will have four skiffs on the water both days!'
