Soling World Championship preview

'Omega Cup 2010'    CYC Media

Soling Audi World Championship - 'Chiemsee is one of the world´s most unpredictable places to sail' said Stuart Walker, a Soling class legend. Unlike no other lover of the Soling class, his boat 'Phoenix' will be present and driven by another legend Hans Fogh sailing with Finch and Devries.

This morning the lake was like a mirror duplicating the phenomenal view from the Alps, while 16 boats were already unpacking and preparing for the top event of the year as well as the biggest Soling fleet in a World Championship since the last Olympic year in 2000 which had 51 boats.

Fourteen nations will contest for the maximum prize, the Soling World Champion Trophy. In three of the four continents, the Soling has been sailed for the past ten years.

Only two previous world champions are missing at this Audi Soling event, one from the Ukraine, Sergey Pichuguin and from Canada Bill Abbott. All others who have won in the past 10 years are present either to ratify or recover their title against numerous other top sailors who have joined the class coming from other classes. Competitors such as two time world FD champion Uwe Steingross who had his 60th birthday with a victory at the last race in the Hungarian Grand prix sailing with Tim Giesecke and Karster Eller, or all the continental champions from the class starting in Europe, North America and South America.

But the main surprise already shown at the Hungarian Grand Prix and Spring Trophy in Italy are the young new comers into the class. Either helming or crewing, the average age of the event for the first time will decrease up to 10 years. Proof of that is the effort to include new young fresh blood in the crews by some top sailors.

From Argentina, Gustavo Warburg representing the Edding team, and from Italy, Michele Tognozzi and non-top sailors from USA, France and Germany, no matter how far they are coming to sail or how expensive for them it is to sail in this big party organized by the Chiemsee Yacht Club a traditional Soling Class supporter from the beginning Olympic days and also during the post-Olympic exclusion in which all special details always have fallen into (Edeltraud) Mauzi’s hand the Koch matriarch.

The measurement will take three days and will include a new feature in the class, a bypass system for two years in future major events if equipment is not changed. A hard task for Hungarian Laszlo Hegymegi the Soling IM present at the event, Class chief measurer Jean Pierre Marmier and his wife Claire will surely be missed, like all others that couldn't be present.

Measurement will start on Friday 22nd and go on until the 24th . Racing will start on Monday 25th in which the nice weather condition actually existent is expected to change, bringing some wind to the lake.
