The 2011 San Fernando Race will get underway at 1210hrs on Wednesday 20 April, with Hong Kong’s Director of Marine, Roger Tupper, firing the start gun off Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Kellett Island base.

Run under the auspices of the Royal Ocean Racing Club the race, at 480nm, is one of RHKYC’s shorter Category 1 Offshore Races and is popular with owners testing their vessel offshore for the first time, particularly as it offers a tactical challenge paired with exhilarating sailing.

The entry list of 20 boats includes a healthy IRC Racing Division, together with IRC Premier Cruising, IRC Cruising and HKPN Divisions. If boats want to break the 10 year old monohull record, the time to beat is 49h 55m 12s, set by Sam Chan’s 70’ ULDB Sled, Ffree Fire in 2001.

RHKYC’s offshore races always attract a large contingent of overseas sailors, and the 2011 San Fernando Race is no exception, welcoming back (amongst others) Lindsay May as Strewth’s navigator, Mark ‘Lefty’ Findlay as navigator on Red Kite II, and five members of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, who will be crewing on FreeFire and using the race as training for the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race.

Media Representatives are cordially invited to attend the following San Fernando Race events;

SFR Skipper’s Briefing
Tuesday 19 April, 1830hrs – RHKYC Kellett Island, Chart Room
This will be followed by a talk by Ian Walker who will share his experiences and tell us what he’s currently up to.

San Fernando Race Start
Wednesday 20 April, 1210hrs – RHKYC Club Line (start may be delayed and moved to Shek O Rock if wind conditions are unfavorable).

A media boat will be available from 1130hrs to 1430hrs.
