Safety Restrictions for Ex-HMAS Adelaide scuttling off Avoca Beach NSW

NSW Maritime Chief Executive Steve Dunn today said boating safety restrictions were in place for the scuttling of the Ex-HMAS Adelaide off Avoca Beach, NSW.

Mr Dunn said the scuttling was scheduled for 10:30am on Wednesday April 13 at a site 1.8 km off Avoca.

'NSW Maritime has strict navigation controls in place for safety reasons,' he said. 'All craft must keep well clear of the ship.'

The NSW Maritime safety controls are as follows:

At 3pm today (Tuesday April 12) the exclusion zone will be 1000m around the ship. The 1000m exclusion zone will remain in force until midday Wednesday April 13;

From midday April 13 until midday April 15 the exclusion zone will be a 200m radius from the marked area around where the ship will be in the process of settling on the sea bed after scuttling;

- No unauthorized vessels will be permitted in the exclusion zone;
- Yellow maker buoys fitted with flashing yellow lights will define the exclusion zone; and
- The area will be patrolled by NSW Maritime and Police Marine Area Command vessels.

'Due to the offshore site, only skippers of well equipped vessels suited to offshore conditions should consider attending the scuttling,' Mr Dunn said. 'With a 1km exclusion zone around the ship, the best and safest vantage spots will be from land.'

The scuttling and underwater safety inspections are subject to weather conditions.
