The RSYS Varuna Trophy, the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s iconic end-of-season race, was won by Division 4 champion Kerstin II by a mere two seconds on corrected time from Division 1 champion Ellipse.

The Varuna Trophy provides a rare opportunity for the top placed yachts in all divisions and classes for the past season to race against each other on Sydney Harbour, under special handicaps set by RSYS handicapper John Maclurcan.

His assessing of their performances proved spot on: only two seconds separated the first two yachts on corrected time, with only three minutes between the first six boats.

Kerstin II, a Hood 25 owned by Ken Chase, John Bowman and John Goldie, finished sixth across the line for a corrected time of 2 hours 16 minutes and 46 seconds.

Ellipse, Brian Bergin’s Northshore 38 placed second on 2:16:48, third place going to the International Yngling champion Miss Pibb, helmed by Hamish Jarrett, with a corrected time of 2:17:6.

Fastest time went to Charles Curran’s Sydney but on corrected time the 60-footer placed last.

The Varuna Trophy commemorates the classic wooden yacht after which the trophy is named, but also her owner, Dr John Musgrove, a member of the Squadron since 1946, who passed away early last year

The Varuna Trophy was presented to the Squadron by members of Varuna’s crew, with many of their skipper’s racing rivals also contributing to its cost, without the prior knowledge of the Dr Musgrove.

The Varuna Trophy race has become one of the most prestigious events on the Squadron’s summer calendar.
