Hobart’s yachting season for 2010-2011 wound up, and most of its participants wound down, last Saturday in the annual Barnes Bay Regatta at Bruny Island.
The Regatta attracted 65 yachts from most Hobart clubs and from down the Huon for a passage race from Castray Esplanade to Bligh Point for three divisions, followed by a regatta race on Barnes Bay for Division 1 and 2.
Ashore, with the boats moored in the sheltered corner of Barnes Day, the crews went ashore for the end-of-season party, a total of 350 people entertained, fed and watered by their hosts, the Kingborough Boating Club.
A fleet of more than 50 boats started the passage race from Castray, the biggest single yacht race start on the Derwent for several seasons, with a moderate northerly breeze giving them a spinnaker (or poled out headsails) run down the river and into the d’Entrecasteaux Channel. Conditions were lighter during the afternoon with the northerly shutting down to a drifter being swinging to the north-west.
Gary Smith’s Bakwelll-White 45 The Fork in the Road took line honours in the morning passage race, but did not stay for the afternoon regatta. Division 1 handicap honours went to Danny Cunningham’s Austral 8 Octopussy from another small boat, Joel Bultman’s Adams 8, Grizzly Adams. Third place went to Interlude.
Outrageous, David Creese’s Beneteau 44.7, led home the Division 2 fleet, with Kruza winning on handicap from Twitch, Rod Marshall’s Lexcen-designed Eureka 31 and Moonshadow, Anthony Ellis’ Lotus 10.6
First place in Division 3 for cruising boats went Rumbeat, Justin Barr’s Farr 1104, second place to the Zeston 40 Eximous (Rob Williams), third to Leonie, Will Justo’s Columbia 27.
Line honours in the regatta race on Barnes Bay went to 42 South, Mark Ballard’s Beneteau First 44.7, with first place on corrected time in Division 1 going to Far Real, Lee Davis’ Farr design. Octopussy followed her passage race win with a second place, third going to Steelin’ Time, David Leake’s Knoop 31.
In Division 2, the winner was Sirocco, Leigh Johnston’s Northshore 38, second place going to Twitch, third to Riverdance, Wayne McNeice’s Southcoast 32.
