The Gosford to Lord Howe Island Yacht Race 2011 continues to be sponsored by Hempel Australia Pty Ltd. The iconic race is ran by Gosford Sailing Club.
The 38th annual blue water race across the northern Tasman Sea to the World Heritage-listed Lord Howe Island, a distance of 416 nautical miles, will start on Saturday, 29 October 2011.
'This means a continuation of the partnership developed over the past five races between Hempel and Gosford Sailing Club, Race Director Bob Swan said today. 'We are very proud to continue this association and look forward to promoting both our club and our sponsor as the planning moves forward.'
The Hempel Gosford to Lord Howe Island Race is the only annual Category 1 ocean race in Australian waters, other than the 628 nautical mile Rolex Sydney Hobart. It is a qualifying race for the Sydney Hobart and is expected to attract a good number of yachts preparing for that race.

Unlike the Sydney Hobart which, apart from crossing eastern Bass Strait, is sailed not far offshore from the east coast of the Australian mainland and then the island state of Tasmania, the race to Lord Howe Island is across the open waters of the Tasman Sea, sailing in a north-easterly direction.
It is also unique in that there is a limit on the size of the fleet and yachts must be accepted by the race committee, keeping in mind that restricted moorings are only available in the pristine lagoon.
Only five moorings are available for yachts with a draft of more than 2.2 metres and 17 moorings for yachts with a draft of less than 2.2 metres. 'This places great pressure on the organisers, but always means a quality fleet is gathered for this annual Category 1 race –a true blue water classic,' the race director added.
The Hempel 38th Gosford to Lord Howe Island Yacht Race will start from Broken Bay at 1300 hours on Saturday, 29 October and, after rounding a mark off Terrigal, a few miles up the coast, the fleet sets sail for the often tough crossing of the Tasman Sea.
