NZL Sailing Team member, Dan Slater, reports from the ISAF Palma World Cup event in the Finn class.

Hi

Today was the end of the Qualifying races for the ISAF Palma World Cup the Finn fleet is 85 strong and has been split into two fleets over the last three days.

The first day was fresh to frightening 25-30 knots and I scored a eighth and seventh which wasn't the best day out but could have been a lot worse.

The second day we sailed the first race in a shifty 8-12 knots and I finished third and the following race was sailed in a sea Breeze of 11-12 knots and I scored a second . So at the end of day two I was fifth overall going into the the last day of qualifying.

Today I opened the racing with a 20th and after a great start just got on the wrong side of the course on the first beat. The second race which was in 12 knots I sailed well and finished fifth and maybe if I hadn't been as conservative It would have been a second. Overall now I'm in sixth place and we will now be split into the top 42 (Gold Fleet) and bottom 43 boats (Silver Fleet) . You race Gold and Silver fleets for the next two days before a medal race.

Its been a bit of a trip to get here we flew to London from Auckland and collected our lease car. We had a tow bar fitted down towards Weymouth where my boat has been stored for the winter so we then collected that and caught a ferry to France and drove the 1400km to Barcelona and got a over night ferry to Palma. From leaving Auckland it was nearly 5 days which isnt the ideal going into a regatta but its how it is.

The first lot of accommodation here in Palma was a disaster. So we moved after day one and everything is fine now with no problems or accidents.

I will keep you posted on the next few days

Dan
