Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia Mapfre is the third stop on the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Cup 2010-2011 series.

With the first day’s high wind speeds of 25-plus knots behind them, the US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics laid down a solid day two in much lighter conditions across the 10 Olympic classes racing at Princess Sofia Trophy.

Two additional second-place finishes moved US Sailing’s Rolex Miami OCR golden girl Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) into the overall lead in the 78-boat Laser Radial class, while in the standard Laser rig class, Rob Crane (Darien, Conn.) turned in 9-2 finishes to join the top 10.

Both USSTAG women’s match racing teams in the Elliott 6m – Team Barkow and Team Tunnicliffe – went undefeated in their respective round robins and advance to the Gold Round.

Two Star teams showed improvement in today’s lighter conditions with Andrew Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) and Ian Coleman (Annapolis, Md.) in sixth, while Andy Horton (S. Burlington, Vt.) and James Lyne (Granville, Vt.) moved into 15th.

USSTAG newcomers Adam Roberts and Nick Martin (both San Diego) took a second in race 3 and now sit 15th overall in the 84-boat Men’s 470 fleet. Erin Maxwell (Wilton, Conn.) and Isabelle Kinsolving Farrar (New York, N.Y.) continued their upward climb and now sit in 10th overall in the 49-boat Women’s 470 fleet.

49er duo Erik Storck and Trevor Moore took a second place in race 4, dropped their worse score to date (an OCS in race 1) and now sit in 18th out of 69 boats.

Similar conditions are expected for tomorrow’s racing.

Athletes Quotes on Day 2 of Racing:

Elizabeth Kratzig Burnham (Corpus Christi, Texas/Miami, Fla.), crew for Sally Barkow (Nashotah, Wis.) in women’s match racing, on straight wins in the first round of women’s match racing: 'A good day, we moved onto the Gold. In Miami we set ourselves back and went into the repechage and nice we don’t have to do that here.'

Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.) on pre-event training and how it prepared the team: 'We did three weeks of training: one week in the U.S. with USSTAG teammates Genny Tulloch, then we went to France to train with the French, Claire Leroy’s team, and then to Barcelona to train with the Russian team, Ekaterina Skudina. All good prep work for this regatta.'

Anna Tunnicliffe on the varying conditions in Palma: 'Yesterday was wicked windy; today is much lighter and calmer. You have to know you have done as much practice as you can, and know that you are quite capable in all conditions. The game is the same; you just have to change for the conditions.'

Brian Fatih, crew with skipper Mark Mendelblatt in the Star (both Miami, Fla.), who injured his knee at US Sailing’s Rolex Miami OCR in January, on his recovery: 'I’ve been working with (USSTAG) physiotherapist Sean Hunt … and everybody is in agreement to do the physical therapy and if there’s a problem later then we’ll get surgery. I feel good; the knee’s about 90%. As far as sailing in the boat it hasn’t affected anything.'

Brian Fatih comments on his Star boat tiller breakdown, day 1 of racing: '(We) went around first weather mark, and we did a jibe and the tiller broke. Then it was a little bit chaotic; we were on two wheels and out of control. We had to sail back in. It’s a shame wish we had another tiller out there, but it’s a lesson learned.'

Racing started Monday, April 4 and continues daily through Friday, April 8. The top 10 finishers in each of nine Olympic Classes will advance to the medal race on Saturday, April 9. Women’s Match Racing consists of an opening series, a knockout series, and a sail-off for boats not advancing to the knockout series, with the final matches scheduled on Saturday, April 9.
