The University of Ottawa Sailing Team kicked off its 2011 racing season this weekend at the North Spring Qualifier hosted at Cornell University. Fourteen schools were in attendance including Queen’s University.

Saturday’s racing got off to a late start with a wind delay until 11am. After the start of the first race winds built throughout the day from 13 to 17 knots. The water still freezing cold and the spring weather made for a very cold day and after capsizing the boat before the start of the fifth race, the University of Ottawa’s B team was unable to compete in the last two races of the day.

Racing was called off after a gust of 21 knots knocked down most of the fleet and only 6 boats managed to finish the race. At the end of racing day 1, Cornell was in first closely followed by Queen’s.

Sunday also provided great winds at around 7-12 knots. Day 2 was much more uneventful and a full rotation of races was completed by 3:15pm. A total of 14 races were completed for both A and B divisions.

Ottawa’s Team finished in 12th. Cornell finished in first, followed by Columbia and Queen’s in third, all of which qualified for the America’s Trophy.
