Record 95 boats hit water for Sabre Class Victorian State Championship

'Over 90 boats line up at Moridialloc SC for the Victorian Sabre State Titltes - Sabre Class Victorian State Titles'    John Dance

At a time when 100+ fleets are rarely more than black and white photographic memories on club room walls, the Sabres are demonstrating that National classes can once again boast such numbers at both state and national levels.

Combining ease of entry, affordability plus a varied and compelling regatta schedule has seen Victorian Sabre fleet swell to near record levels, with 95 entries for the recent State Titles at Mordialloc SC.

With the forthcoming Nationals being hosted at Blairgowrie, the association is confident that the idyllic holiday location, schedule of social events and superb sailing water will attract well over 100 boats. Particularly pleasing is the growing number of juniors. Several members of the Opti Worlds team joined the Sabres class at Mordialloc to gain valuable big fleet experience. Covering the full spectrum of conditions over two weekends, Gary McLennan from Black Rock took the 2011 Victorian title by a single point from class stalwart and five time national champion Wayne Bates, representing Blairgowrie YS. Callum Burns, also from Blairgowrie, completed the podium trio.

Placing strong emphasis on the social elements surrounding regattas has been a key to success of the Sabre fleet for several decades, so it’s not surprising that the Sabre remains a sound choice for those seeking a fun, affordable way to race in big fleets.
