Qld Fishing bans hurt industry: Sunfish favours consultation

'Adult Snapper'    Fish-e-Fax
The recreational fishing group Sunfish says it hopes the Queensland Government takes on board its concerns about proposed new rocky reef fin fish laws, as the six week moratorium on snapper fishing in Queensland expired today.

The executive officer of Sunfish Queensland, Judy Lynne, says the organisation wants open dialogue with the Government and proper consultation.

'What we're looking for is for someone to listen to what we're saying and take it on board,' she said. 'If there was a problem in the snapper fishery we'd be the first ones to put our hands up and ask for something to be done about it.'

The six-week State Government ban was put in place last month to help regenerate dwindling stocks of snapper.

It also applied to teraglin, jew and pearl perch. Judy Lynne says it has been a huge impost on the fishing industry.

'Quite significantly actually - what's really disappointing is that as far we're aware, there's been no monitoring done for this closure to find out whether it's achieved the outcomes that Fisheries said it was going to achieve,' she said.

Lynne says the ban has hurt recreational and professional fishers. 'The effect that we know that it's had is it's severely affected the charter industry,' she adds. 'A lot of those have not been able to work the whole of the six weeks.'

Queensland Fisheries Minister Craig Wallace says officers were closely watching catchments.

'We have officers out on the water every day of the week, talking to fishermen, looking at their catchers and that's an important part of the record making exercise in finding out what's happening in the fishery,' he says.
