Three Peaks Race - In another first for events in Tasmania, in this year’s Australian Three Peaks Race the public will able to be follow runners' progress over the mountains through satellite technology. Each pair of team runners will be equipped with small satellite trackers.

Position plots for each team of runners will be transmitted every 10 minutes for viewing on the race website as the runners take on the arduous routes over Mt Strzelecki at Flinders Island (65 kms return), Mt Freycinet (35 kms) on Tasmania’s picturesque east coast and Mt Wellington (33 kms) the magnificent backdrop to the city of Hobart.

Weighing just 147 grams the small trackers will provide an added interest for those who follow the race on the internet as well as giving the runners confidence that they can send a signal to race organisers independent of cell phone coverage should assistance be needed.

'We know how successful the yacht trackers have been in adding to the interest of the race', race chairman Alastair Douglas said. 'The race pioneered yacht tracking for a Tasmanian event so it is logical that the concept is taken further by being the first event to add satellite tracking of the runners.'

When not being used for the Three Peaks Race, the satellite trackers are available for hire at nominal rates for sailors, bush walkers or other adventurers where mobile phone coverage is unavailable, giving a line of communication to friends and family using a number of pre-programmed messages and, should it be required, a request to emergency services for assistance. Further information about the trackers can be obtained from the race chairman Alastair Douglas.

The 23rd annual race starts at 2.00 pm on Good Friday 22nd April at Beauty Point with the first teams arriving in Hobart on Easter Monday. Race entries are currently being received with an expected fleet of about 10 teams.
