Boating may still be largely a male domain but for the second year running the peak state recreational marine industry body Marine Queensland has a female - Sharon Russell- as the president of the board of directors.

Director of the Riviera Syndication Sharon Russell was unanimously re-elected to the role she first took over in 2010.

In a time where both the Federal and State Governments have been called to look at introducing legislation to address the issue of limited numbers of females on Company Boards, Ms Russell will again take the helm after Marine Queensland elected its new board at its Annual General Meeting at the Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club on March 25, 2011.

Ms Russell, who previously held the 2009 vice president role, role said even though she was still the first female president for the body it showed experience was all that should matter on today’s board.

'The Marine industry is coming through some tough times,' Ms Russell said. 'The spotlight of the GFC seemed to be on the building and tourism sectors whereas the boating industry, in every facet from sales to boat building, really had a tough time.

'This is about good leadership to help our members have representation in marine issues on a government level to commercial enterprises. Many of our commercial operators went through a difficult period with the snapper ban and relied on us to forge good communication of their needs with the appropriate government bodies.

'Marine Queensland doesn’t shy away from the big issues and the new board is committed to making sure our members get the representation they deserve.'

Ms Russell brings more than 20 years of boating experience to the board.

Riviera Syndication specialises in the syndication of Riviera Cruisers worldwide and owns a travel agency to look after Riviera Syndication owners. Together with her husband John, Ms Russell owned and ran Boatshare Australia, Yachtshare and John Crawford Marine until they were sold to concentrate on Riviera Syndication. Ms Russell grew up in a high performance engine building and boat racing (Waggott) family in Sydney, having competed in New South Wales, Queensland and Australian outboard racing championships.

The 2010 Board of Directors:

Vice President - Barry Jenkins; Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show

Treasurer - Greg Nickerson; Northside Marine

Committee - Brett Edmonds, Club Marine

Matthew Hodson, John Crawford Marine
