Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania’s closest pennant results in recent seasons, scoring countbacks were needed yesterday to decide the winner of two Division 1 pennants – with Silver Mist taking out both.
Skippered by Andrew Sutherland, the Farr 37 finished the season on a winning note by winning the last race in both the AMS and PHS handicap categories of Division 1.
The final pennant day brought light to moderate breezes that swung from a morning nor’nor’wester of up to 10 knots and a light sou-wester of 5-7 knots. The Farr 40 sailed three races, all other divisions completing two races on the River Derwent.
Silver Mist sailed two excellent final races in the light and variable breeze, scoring a third and first in PHS and a fourth and first in AMS to tie with Pisces (David Taylor) on the PHS scoreboard and with Intrigue (Don Calvert) on the AMS score.
On the countback of placings, Silver Mist won the PHS pennant from Pisces, which won the first race yesterday, with Intrigue just one point back.

In the AMS category, the countback went to Silver Mist from Intrigue, with third place overall going to Dump Truck (Edward Fader) which had been series leader going into yesterday’s race. Only 10 seconds separated Silver Mist and Intrigue on corrected time in the final race.
Don Calvert notched up his 17th RYCT pennant with his Castro 40 Intrigue, winning the IRC pennant with two first places yesterday under this handicap system. Overall, Dump Truck was two points back in second place, third going to Pisces.
Stephen Boyes helmed Wired to three close wins on the final day for the Farr 40s to take out the pennant from War Games (Wayne Banks-Smith) and Hughie Lewis’ Tilford Auto Group.
International Dragon class skipper Nick Rogers won his 11th Tasmanian championship, sailing Karabos IX to victory from Ridgeway (Steven Shield) and Aquila (Jock Young).
The 9-metre class pennant went to Wildfire (Team Wildfire) from Rouseabout (Derek Inglis) and Trouble (David Willans).
In Division 2, Serica (Charles Peacock) won the pennant by just one point from Nigel Johnson’s Ingenue, both boats winning a race yesterday. Third overall was Hornet (Nevelle Georgeson)
Malcolm Cooper’s Kaiulani was a comfortable pennant winner in Division 3, finishing five points ahead of Street Car (Peter Bingham) and Ragtime (Tom Kirkland).
