Dolphin Spirit record solo sail to Japan cancelled

Michael Reppy changes plans and cancels solo sail to Japan to fund raise for Japan relief.

Things change, and sometimes in ways unimaginable just days or weeks before our long, hard planned efforts come to fruition. Such is the case with Michael Reppy and Dolphin Spirit, whose two part record attempt on the SF to Japan record attempt. The window of opportunity had just began to open for the correct conditions to depart SF in the next few weeks. That was before the devastating 9.0 earthquake and sub-sequential tsunami in Japan. Here is Michaels latest press release:

Please donate to earthquake/tsunami relief
This past week has been one of great shock, pain, and disbelief on seeing the images of the massive destruction from the Japan earthquake and tsunami, and the ongoing threat of nuclear meltdown at Fukushima.

It became clear that it was not right to continue with my plans to do record solo sail to Japan next month. I have cancelled the sail for this year and shifted my Dolphin Spirit Project to fund raising for Japan relief.

The Save Japan Dolphins campaign will continue, but the priority is now to support recovery and rebuilding efforts, and closing of unsafe nuclear plants. I applaud and pray for the success of the brave men risking their life in high levels of radiation, working to cool the fuel rods and shut down the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Save Japan Dolphins has listed recommended relief groups to donate to here.

I will donate the $1,000 proceeds from our Ramblin’ Jack Elliot benefit concert to two great organizations in Japan working on these issues:

Peace Boat Japan, an NGO based in Japan, promoting peace, human rights, and sustainable development, mostly through bringing people together on 'peace voyages' on a ship traveling the world. They have set up earthquake/tsunami relief teams. Here is a recent Facebook post: Peace Boat advance team is now based in Ishinomaki City in Miyagi, a hard-hit coastal town. Last night our team brought 1500 meals to Ishinomaki Nisseki Hospital which had run out of food for its 500 patients. We're now asking for support to continue and expand these activities, through donating money, cooking equipment, blankets, or volunteer time.

Green Action Japan, a Kyoto based NGO dedicated to educating the public on the perils of nuclear energy and shifting Japan’s energy program from nuclear to energy efficiency and renewables.

This week, I attended a great event hosted by Earth Island Institute at the Brower Center in Berkeley, featuring Green Action’s executive director, Aileen Mioko Smith, who gave update on the danger of further meltdown of the Fukushima reactors, and their long time campaign warning of the dangers of aging nuclear plants near earthquake faults, and need to shut them down.

Here’s how you can donate to these groups:

Peace Boat Japan: Website
Tax deductible donations go through Peace Boat US: Website

Green Action Japan: Website
Tax deductible donations go through their fiscal sponsor International Forum On Globalization donation: Website

Or:

You can send check made out to me (but you will lose benefit of the tax deduction), and I will put together with the $1000 and send in a larger donation (half to each group) on behalf of Dolphin Spirit Project:

Michael Reppy
25 Indian Road
San Rafael
CA 94903

Call me for more info: (415) 686-0529

Thank you for supporting Japan relief efforts during their great time of need.
