Giltinan Championship live tracking

Giltinan Championship.

Former team mates John Winning and Anthony Young produced yet another winner in the 18ft Skiffs. Their efforts (at very short notice) introduced a Live Tracking system in the recent Giltinan Championship on Sydney Harbour.

Both are long time 18ft Skiff competitors and were competing in separate teams at the 2011 Giltinan Championship. Winning skippered Yandoo while Young crewed with Western Australia's Grant Rollerson on Slam.

Anthony (commonly known as Jack) has been associated with the 18s for more than 20 years and has won every major title available in the class. As well as winning the 2000 Giltinan, Australian and NSW titles he has skippered many skiffs over the years and went within a couple of points in taking out the 1996 Giltinan with Nokia. He is also noted for his sail making and boat tuning capabilities in the 18s.

John (Woody) Winning is famous in the class for the numerous championship wins as well as being runner-up to the legendry Iain Murray in two Giltinan and three Australian Championships.

His support of the class in so many ways has led to the tag 'modern day Mark Foy' (18 Footers founder in the 1890s) being applied to him.

Aside from the many outstanding achievements of the pair, they can now be recognized for their efforts in the introduction of Live Tracking at the world's major 18 Footer event, the Giltinan Championship.

There is no doubt it is the biggest breakthrough in the 18s in Australia for many years.

Stewart Wood, Marketing andents Coordinator of Yachting Australia, organised the system in just a few days and assisted Jack with the 'hands-on' work throughout the regatta.

Without Jack's initiative and John Winning's personal financial support, this wonderful breakthrough would not have happened during the 2011 Giltinan.

We all owe a great debt of thanks to Jack, John and Stewart for their efforts.

A job really well done for the sport of 18ft Skiff Racing.
