RYA OnBoard scheme introduces sailing and windsurfing to young people
'A chance to go sailing for youngsters in Humberside'
Humberside young sailors benefit from the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) OnBoard scheme.
The OnBoard scheme, one of the flagship programmes run by the RYA, is a grass roots programme which introduces sailing and windsurfing to young people aged 8 to 18, through schools, youth groups and RYA training centres.
'We are delighted to be expanding the RYA OnBoard programme,' said Liz Wrigglesworth, RYA Yorkshire and Humberside OnBoard Development Officer.
'The scheme has been running throughout Yorkshire for a couple of years now and more sailing centres are joining as OnBoard partners every month. Expanding into Humberside will mean we can offer sailing opportunities to even more local children.'
'Some of the most talented and successful sailors in the UK began their sailing careers in Yorkshire and Humberside,' explained Liz.
'The OnBoard scheme is gathering pace across the country. This is great news for youngsters as sailing combines health, exercise and skills development.'
Over a ten year period OnBoard aims to introduce a minimum of 500,000 children to sailing and windsurfing in the UK, converting over 10% of them into regular participants. So far it’s well on track.
