Consistent helming skills combined with outstanding crew technique allowed Southport Yacht Club skipper Peter Lahey to retain the prestigious Go to Blazers trophy with Still Crazy on the Southport Broadwater on Sunday.

The two day seven race series attracted Queensland’s best including the former Australian champion Chris Annear racing under the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club burgee.

Annear stacked his crew with local knowledge however the former Blazer 23 champion Neil Sherring while making few tactical mistakes on his home club course at the tiller of Feral fell out of touch on the light downwind legs to sail on even pace with the lighter Still Crazy combination.

Consistent tactical options and all angle boat speed allowed skipper Peter Lahey to steer Still Crazy to a four point win their best six race score 1-2-1-1-1-3 compared with Feral 2-3-1-3-2-2 while Phil Crawford’s Something Offensive was another two points off the pace with their 1-4-2-3-4-1 score.

As expected the more experienced Blazer 23 class crews dominated the series however results are expected to change in the future when the talented Southport Yacht Club youth squad become more familiar with one design racing in the tactically demanding competition.

There were times when the teenage skippers Jack Sherring, Joel Turner, Sophie Lahey and Jessica Hansen were ‘up in the face’ and sharing the same sea space prompting their older and more experienced rivals to dig deeper for an edge in speed.

At times the older skippers resorted to telling the teenagers that they had no right to be there but the new generation skippers simply ignored the oldest trick in the book to indicate they had the rule knowledge and youth on their side to become a real threat when the second leg of the Go To Blazers series is contested on the tricky Noosa Yacht and Rowing club courses over the June holiday weekend.

World Junior Moth class champion Jack Sherring (15) steered Fastway Couriers into fourth place while Joel Turner (Potato Press) placed fifth with the talented Sophie Lahey (Bundy Express) finished seventh four points ahead of Max Fabre (Jessica Hanson).

Results Southport Yacht Club Go to Blazers Regatta (Best 6 from 7)

Feral (Neil Sherring) 2-3-1-3-2-2 13 pts 2,

Fastway Couriers (Jack Sherring) .. 4-4-5-4-2-4 23pts 4
