20 teams competed in the annual Marine Trades Challenge, where apprentices from the marine industry and four school teams have two hours to build sail, paddle and motor a catamaran in Auckland's Westhaven Marina.
by Richard Gladwell
Each team was supplied with three sheets of 6mm ply, and half a sheet of 9mm ply to be used for the transom and bulkheads.
The teams are allowed to bring a pre-built bridgedeck or joining structure to fit between the hulls, these ranged from simple wooden affairs to quite complex carbon structures.
Sail-World's camera was at Westhaven during the building phase
