Marine Trades Challenge teams build catamarans in two hours

20 teams competed in the annual Marine Trades Challenge, where apprentices from the marine industry and four school teams have two hours to build sail, paddle and motor a catamaran in Auckland's Westhaven Marina.

Each team was supplied with three sheets of 6mm ply, and half a sheet of 9mm ply to be used for the transom and bulkheads.

The teams are allowed to bring a pre-built bridgedeck or joining structure to fit between the hulls, these ranged from simple wooden affairs to quite complex carbon structures.
