The premier winter series in the North West concluded at Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club on Sunday 6 March 2011 with week 8 of the Tipsy Icicle Series. The series attracted in excess of 150 boats in the three fleets of Asymmetric, Laser and Handicap with 63 boats on the water for the last day. Sunday’s forecast was again excellent with an ESE wind forecast and temperatures well into the teens.
The actual combination of the wind direction and the temperature made for a fantastic day for the two races. 19 asymmetrics made it out on the day and close racing was seen all day between the RS400s of Hamish Gledhill (with Simon Dowse), Dave Exley (with Nigel Hall) and Louise McKeand (with Cathy Partington). 19 Lasers were out for the day and the podium this week was dominated by Richard Catchpole, Paul Heath and Howard Green. The 19 strong Handicap fleet was again dominated by Paul Allen and Andy Flitcroft. So all in all what a great series.
After a slow winter due to the ice and the lack of wind Leigh and Lowton have had one of the most successful winter series ever – over 150 boats, food to die for, superb race management, a clubhouse extension well on its way and, as the Commodore (Mike Baldwin) pointed out at the prizegiving, a superb busy season to look forward to as well as L&L celebrating its 25th anniversary.
