GP14 2011 Speed Sails Grand Prix focus

'GP14 Nationals 2010'    GP14 Class Association

GP14 Speed Sails Grand Prix - In this second article we are spotlighting the two Scottish Clubs hosting the two Scottish events that make up part of the Grand Prix Series, the Scottish Championship venue at Annandale in June and the nominated event venue at Arran Yacht Club in September.

Area Rep Duncan Greenhalgh assisted by Paul O’Neil.

Annandale Sailing Club
Annandale Sailing Club is thrilled to be hosting the 2011 GP14 Scottish Championship on June, 11th & 12th. The club hosts an annual GP14 Open which, in 2010, attracted 17 boats from Scotland and the north of England, hopefully that turnout will be swelled for this Championship and Grand Prix qualification event.

The club is a very popular venue for Scottish Championships partly due to its accessibility being situated just 4 miles off the M74 at Lockerbie, approximately 20 miles north of the border with England. The club also has a great reputation for hosting good open meetings with efficient race management and great hospitality.

The club is based at Castle Loch, the largest of several lochs around the pretty village of Lochmaben and is striving to maintain fleet racing for its 5 recognised classes: GP14, Laser, Mirror, Optimist and Topper. The club is proud of its strong cadet section. Since 2005, developments have enhanced facilities at Annandale with extended changing rooms, a new jetty, re-surfaced launching and a new boathouse.

Arran Yacht Club
Arran Yacht Club was formed in 1956 to promote the sport of sailing on the Isle of Arran. The club is based at Lamlash Pier and as well as owning its premises has a long term lease on the Pier, Slipways and adjoining shore. We have a strong junior section, Arran Junior Sailing Club, who meet on a Tuesday evening and a number of juniors join in with the Saturday racing.

During the summer the club holds handicap dinghy racing on Saturdays and some Sundays from Easter to October. Regular classes involved are Albacores, GP14s and Lasers but any dinghy with a Portsmouth Yardstick handicap is welcome to join in. In addition keelboats have their own programme of Cup Races and some join in with mainland clubs to race.

Lamlash Harbour is an ideal area for sailing with relatively sheltered waters and scenery to die for. From the water you get views to the north of Lamlash Village and the hills behind, including Goat Fell, to the east Holy Isle, now a Buddhist retreat centre, to the south Kings Cross and a Viking fort, where the Vikings assembled before the battle of Largs in 1263.

Visitors are always welcome and can join and store their boat for the duration of their holiday. All we ask is they contact the Secretary or Treasurer beforehand. On the water we provide 20 Visitor moorings which we charge at a rate of £15 per night or £75 for a week.

Access to The Isle of Arran is by Cal Mac ferry from either Ardrossan to Brodick or Claonaig to Lochranza, booking for vehicles on the Brodick route is advised, especially if you are towing your GP14.
