Geographe Bay Race Week is hosted by the Geographe Bay Yacht Club and is the largest Yachting Regatta in Western Australia. It is held from February 25th to March 4th 2011.
Day 5.
There is now no doubt that Alan Brierty’s TP62 Limit will win the Division 1 IRC trophy for Geographe Bay Race Week with another two victories from three races in today’s windward and return races. The Next Factor consolidated her position with first, second and third placings, to be best of the rest.
Laurie Flynne’s Aardvark relished the light winds for a hat trick in Division 2 races. Anthony Kirke’s Archambault 35 Archimedes gathered two second and a third to continue the fine form he has shown in this regatta.
In Division 3, Constellation further increased her lead with wins in all three races ahead of Bad Habits, her main opposition, and the Addams Family third in all three races.
Ken Mills’ little tri Vamos will move clearly to the top of the multihull table with his win today, ahead Jewel and Triumph.
Hans on Deck, with a second today, still needs another good result in tomorrow’s final race of the Premier Cruising Division to sew up the title. George Mardon’s modified diamond Intruder sailed an excellent race today to take the win on handicap, with the consistent Finistere third.
Conrad Todd enjoyed his first handicap win of the series in the Thompson 870 Stand Aside, a boat he imported from Canada after being deeply impressed by her sister ship Gypsy, which beat him across the line by just 24 seconds. Mike Davies in D’Vine finished second ahead of Mark Blizard’s Fremantle 8 Ziggy Stardust.
Terry Foster’s first over the line in the sportsboat division was only good enough to earn a third on handicap for his Melges 24 Dogs. Tim Reger turned tables on Rod Beurteaux today with a fine win.
Sante, with two wins and a third still needs a good race tomorrow to take out the PHB division 4 title, but her campaign was helped today by the topsy turvy results. Albany skipper Michael Cameron sailing the flying tiger matador was the only other yacht to show any sort of consistency with a second and two thirds.
Regardless of the outcome of tomorrow’s last day of sailing, the vast majority of sailors will return home well satisfied from their visit to Geographe Bay this year. Winds have been fair, if a little light on occasions, racing has been close and the division splits have worked exceptionally well.
